Most churches have low attendance on the Sunday after Easter. I’ve been told that this Sunday is known as “Cannonball Sunday” because “you could shoot a cannonball down the aisle without endangering anyone.”
But if Christ’s resurrection is worth celebrating on Easter, it is worth celebrating always. Every Sunday. Every day. No exceptions.
As I looked toward this Sunday, fully anticipating an attendance drop at both of my churches, the following song came to me. It is nothing complex or new, but maybe that’s the point. Crowds flock to church on Easter because it’s a novelty. But what I think we need, especially on the Sunday after Easter, is to faithfully hear the gospel again and again—to welcome it as good news even when it doesn’t feel like, well, “news.”
Friend, resist the urge to stay home this Sunday. He is still risen, and he still calls us to gather.
The Sunday After (Still Risen)
Verse 1
He is still risen,
He is still risen.
The tomb still is empty,
The cross—it is bare.
You will not find him there.
Chorus 1
But still, we gather
As his Body and Bride.
We sing together
Of his sacrifice.
Though the flowers fade
And the feasting is done,
We celebrate
The rising of the Son.
Verse 2
We are forgiven,
We are forgiven.
We who were dead
Have been made alive,
United with our Christ.
Chorus
And so, we gather
As his Body and Bride.
We sing together
Of his death and life.
Though the flowers fade
And the feasting is done,
We celebrate
The rising of the Son.
Verse 3
This is the season
Of resurrection—
Not only today,
For eternity’s near.
We echo its anthem here.
And we will find him there.
Chorus 3
And then, forever
As his Body and Bride
We’ll sing together
In unending life—
Where no praises fade,
When the feast is just begun,
We’ll rest in the light
Of the never-setting Son.
As usual, I am not an overly confident singer, but below is a demo track for reference. If you’re interested in singing this song, I would LOVE to collaborate with you. Please fill out my contact form, and I’ll send you a chord chart and any other resources you need.
