My husband and I love Batman. He’s probably the only superhero I can actually stand. However, I envy him this one thing: the simplicity of his double identity. I would love to simply be “reclusive millionaire” by day and “avenger of the city” by night.
Really, I just like the idea of having a clear separation between my day job and my dream job. “Writer by day, musician by night” sounds pretty good but it still misses the mark. Music is my paying job, and writing remains my passion. It’s all backward, eluding a concise summary.
My life is much more like this:
Writer from 9:00-11:30, music teacher from 12:00-4:00, accompanist three days a week from 4:00-9:00, worship director on Wednesdays and Sundays, pastor’s wife all day every day.
If you’ve known me for any amount of time, you know that I can’t sit still for very long. I have to be working or running or creating. And yet…there’s something attractive about being two things and two things only, about having a clear career-hobby separation. (Does prowling the streets of Gotham count as a hobby?)
There’s not much point to this post except to shout my thoughts to the void in hopes that there are others out there who feel the same. If this is the case, don’t tell me if it means unmasking yourself as the silent protector of civilization. If you’re just an ordinary, slightly-frazzled creative like me, though, I’d love to make your acquaintance.
