HBO is gearing up to release a new adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books, and I am enjoying a reread of the British versions. But the thought police of the internet are perturbed by the unceasing popularity of Rowling’s brilliant books because, apparently, authors are not allowed to be famous or successful unless they unquestioningly hold to certain cultural creeds. I could point out the irony of the same folks who are adamantly anti-book-banning being the most aggressive in “canceling” authors. But as rational arguments are no longer an effective weapon in this sphere, I am simply going to repost this imaginative “open letter” from six years ago.
