I’ve been sick this week, which is never fun—especially when I know I still have to get up early and work on Sunday. But perhaps now more than when I’m well, it’s important to focus my heart and pray over tomorrow’s worship.
God of all comfort, encourage us as we gather tomorrow (2 Cor. 1:3). To the anxious and overthinking, grant the peace that surpasses understanding (Phil. 4:7). To the weary, give rest, and to the weighed-down, relief (Matt. 11:28–30).
Be with those whose physical health makes in-person worship difficult or painful. Strengthen their bodies and encourage their spirits that they may worship you heartily and healthily. And teach us to imitate your Son by caring tenderly for these members.
Remind us that your peace is about wholeness—in our individual bodies and souls, as well as in the Body of Christ. We confess that our musical worship is more often a source of division than unity. We prioritize our preferences over the people you have given us to serve. We too readily divide over musical styles or refuse to participate when the songs are not our favorites. Convict us of these, for we are one Body of many members—one chord of many notes—and we all must play our part.
Above all, Lord, constantly remind us of why we worship: we have peace with you through Christ Jesus, whose body was broken for us. Keep us ever astonished at this wonderful thing! May our words and attitudes tomorrow exalt our Prince of Peace. May our songs proclaim the one true gospel and knit us together in fellowship.
In the name of the God of all Comfort, the Prince of Peace, and the Spirit who binds us together, Amen (Eph. 4:3).
