Reading Roundup – January 2023

Although I read eleven books this month, not every one was a winner. However, I did read several that are now on my favorites list! Check them out below:

1. Marmee by Sarah Miller I read this right after rereading Little Women and LET ME TELL YOU MILLER DID HER HOMEWORK! This book beautifully complements Louisa May Alcott’s original and was a sheer joy to read. Truly stunning!

2. Johann Sebastian Bach by Rick Marschall This brief biography was enjoyable and thought-provoking. It highlights the spiritual life of Bach and, unlike another biography I’m creeping through, actually gives his faith serious attention and credit.

3. A Passion for the Impossible by Miriam Huffman Rockness This lovely biography of painter and missionary Lilias Trotter was inspiring artistically and spiritually. It is an especially powerful read for young women, but would bolster the courage of any Christian!

4. The Secular Creed by Rebecca McLaughlin This is perhaps the most nuanced, biblical approach I’ve encountered to progressive issues today. I found myself encouraged and convicted, equipped with the research and exegesis necessary to uphold a biblical worldview, as well as challenged to live out this worldview with justice, gentleness, and self-awareness.

5. Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir I read this because “The Book Pile” podcast recommended it, and I was sorely afraid of being burned by another over-hyped newish release. BUT this ended up being an absolutely delight. I shed tears, laughed aloud, and wish it could have kept going for another hundred pages. Just marvelous—good sci-fi fun with a surprising dose of heart.
