We Sing!

If you’ve been reading my blog for any amount of time, you know how passionate I am about congregational singing. You might also know that, as I’m expecting my first child, I’m joyfully building up my library of children’s books. When looking through Crossway’s latest releases earlier this month, how could I possibly resist this picture book about why we sing?

About & Review

We Sing! is a gem of a book, well worth adding to any family library. Through adorable illustrations and short rhymes, it teaches even the littlest readers why Christians sing. This book is written by Kristyn Getty of Getty Music. She clearly understands not only music but children, and did an excellent job.

The book begins with a description of the human voice, explaining that this amazing instrument points toward an amazing Creator. Then, the book explains that Christians sing not only because they are made for music but have been redeemed to worship!

Next, this book describes different types of singing and singers. Some are loud, some soft, and so on. This section encourages kids to use their unique voices to praise God without fear or reluctance.

I appreciated that Kristyn then clarifies that the best songs are scripture-saturated songs. It’s never too early for children to learn the importance of dwelling in God’s Word through music (Col. 3:16). She also explains that singing helps us think and act faithfully, an important point for both children and parents! She then adds that singing helps draw us closer together with other Christians, as well as the angels and saints in heaven.

Overall, this is an impressively comprehensive theology of singing for young readers. Unsurprisingly, I love it and highly recommend it!

A Note on the Illustrations

I know all too well that the illustrations can made or break a picture book. My mom and I once wrote what I still consider to be a decent children’s book but, as neither of is artistic (and I was only about ten), that book has not gone very far.

By contrast, We Sing! is not only beautifully written but beautifully designed and illustrated. The style reminds me of a felt board, classic and colorful with fun geometric details. This is because the illustrator, Laura K. Sayers, works by layering paper cuttings. You can learn more about her work using this link.

Perhaps what I appreciated most about the illustrations is that they are interesting without being overstimulating. Children will enjoy their details and textures without being overwhelmed (a common problem with children’s media in this age).

Recommendation & Purchase Information

We Sing! would make a perfect addition to family devotions or Sunday school classes. It can be purchased anywhere you would ordinarily order books. Crossway and The Gospel Coalition both offer specials for bulk/church orders. If you’d like to order a copy of We Sing! and support my blog, you can do so using my Amazon associate’s link.

Note: I received a copy of We Sing! from Crossway in exchange for an honest review.
