A Prayer for Preparing to Lead Worship

I’ve been convicted lately that we pray before sermons and sacraments, but not before singing. Especially if you are a worship leader or volunteer, consider praying this little prayer along with me before your next service:

Lord, establish now the work of our hands. Make them skillful, not that we might garner glory for ourselves, but that we might support your people in glorifying you without distraction or disruption. Strengthen our voices so that we might help build up your people into a temple of praise.

Breathe your Spirit into your people’s lungs. Fill them that they might sing, and fill them as they sing. Grant them the power to praise you in spirit and in truth, with love and self-control. Thank you for making us instruments of your good works, in and beyond our gatherings as the church. Let us leave this place refreshed and renewed, ready to honor you this week in our mundane work as much as our musical worship.

In the name of our hymn-singing Lord Jesus, by the power of the song-sustaining Spirit, and to the glory of our Heavenly Father, who sings over us.

Amen.
