It’s snowing lovely fat flakes, which always makes me want to curl up with good music, a good book, and a good snack. Whatever the weather is where you are, the following recommendations are sure to brighten up the rest of your February!
This Perfect Cozy Series
Snow always makes me want to reread James Herriot’s charming All Creatures Great and Small series. They are sheer wholesome delight, and I’ve heard that the PBS series is also excellent.
This Reflective and Imaginative Album
I first discovered Sarah Sparks in college and have been a fan since then. Her style is so clever yet simple, and her lyrics are remarkably insightful and self-reflective. This album, based on C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia is a perennial favorite. I always give it a listen when it snows because my front yard looks exactly like Narnia’s Lantern Waste (see featured photo).
This Insightful Book on Worship
Although written specifically about Lutheran hymnody, this concise guide to meaning in church music should be required reading for all worship leaders. It clearly articulates how music takes on particular meanings and provides insight into how we as leaders and worshipers can be sensitive to this while planning and participating in services. It can be read in a day and is well worth it!
This Accessible and Timeless Piano Book
I have been using Jerry Ray’s Hymns with Style for worship services since I was twelve years old and it is always well received. These pieces are not overly difficult, but are crafted with timeless beauty and work beautifully in smaller venues.
This Multitasking Machine
I used to struggle during the winter because I love running and walking outdoors. This walking pad has been a lifesaver. I hop on it when answering emails, blogging, or sometimes just while watching TV. It’s relatively quiet, works like a charm, and is a marvelous way to get those steps in when it’s yucky outside.
Conclusion
I hope you saw something that might help you endure what remains of the winter. As a reminder, any purchases made using the links in this post help cover the cost of running my blog. However, your readership is the best way to support my work—thank you for being here!
